Although August doesn’t have a national holiday, there are many days on the calendar to celebrate various occasions. While August marks the transition from summer vacation to back-to-school, it also has several important dates. Honoring Heroes, Friends, and Felines in August
The American calendar seemingly never stops growing. Over the course of our country’s history, holidays have been added, sometimes being made official, but more often than not, certain ones never make it to the national calendar. That’s okay, because we’d never get anything done. And when it comes to staying busy, nothing does this better than nature itself.

National Friendship Day, Sunday, August 2nd
Obviously, this is a U.S. observance encouraging people to celebrate platonic friendships. It’s an important sentiment because, as the old saying goes, “Your friends are the family you choose.” Family relationships can be complex because they involve a sense of allegiance, responsibility, and duty. All of this, even when the relationship isn’t great or strained. But not your friends. Friends often fill the void left by certain family members, and it’s only fitting we take a day to recognize their role in our lives and give thanks for it.
Purple Heart Day, Friday, August 7th
Purple Heart Day does far more than just honor the creation of the Purple Heart medal by George Washington in 1782, and recognize service members wounded or killed in action. It serves as a stark and sobering reminder that freedom truly isn’t free. A price is paid for the liberty we all love, and sometimes, it takes a level of sacrifice that few are actually prepared to make. So, it’s definitely worthwhile.
International Cat Day, Saturday, August 8th
Created by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in 2002 to celebrate cats and promote their welfare, International Cat Day is a time to celebrate the most curious creature among us. And though they’re tough to live with sometimes, our kitties help to make our lives more interesting and, dare we say, fulfilling.
National Navajo Code Talkers Day, Friday, August 14th
National Navajo Code Talkers Day was first established by President Reagan in 1982 to honor the Navajo (and other Native American) Code Talkers who used their languages to create unbreakable codes during WWII, helping the Allies gain the edge and defeat the Nazis. Unable to decode the transmissions, the Axis Powers failed to gain critical intelligence and allowed the Allies to gain tactical advantages. It’s observed nationally, with special events often in Arizona.
Other August Celebrations
August is also the month of a few other special days. For instance, National Aviation Day, observed on August 19, commemorates Orville Wright’s birthday and honors the history and development of aviation in the country.
Then, there’s National Senior Citizens Day on August 21. On this day, we recognize the achievements, contributions, and support systems for older adults in the U.S.
And last but certainly not least, August 1st is National Girlfriends Day, an unofficial holiday. While the exact origins are unclear, the day is generally seen as an opportunity for friends to celebrate the bond of female friendship.
